What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy, also known as Orofacial Myology, is the study and treatment of normal and abnormal use of the tongue and facial muscles and their relationships with teeth, speech and swallowing.

What are some of the Causes?

In most cases it is a combination of the following factors:

  • Tongue Thrusting  aka: Reverse Swallow
  • Prolonged Thumb or Pacifier Sucking
  • Open Mouth Posture  due to enlarged tonsils or chronic upper respiratory disorders

Why is it Important to Complete Therapy?

Negative effects of one or more of the previous causes can result in:

  • Teeth movement or orthodontic relapse, particularly dental eruption patterns and the alignment of the jaws.
  • Speech patterns /s/ sound distortion or "lisping" and the sh/ch/j/z/t/d/l/n/r/ sounds
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMD) disorder
  • Posture problems
  • Periodontal disease
  • Headaches
